Brookview targets families more than a third of the homeless population - at risk of long-term public dependency that demonstrate the capacity to move toward self-sufficiency. Drawn from shelters and hotels/motels throughout Greater Boston, they are overwhelmed, with limited or poor parenting skills, many with histories of domestic violence, and substance abuse. Despite these obstacles, families entering our programs have demonstrated strength and perseverance. They bring motivation and the desire to achieve independence.
The typical family is a single mother average age 29 with three children; the majority had their first child as a teenager; less than 30% have high school degrees; 85% receive welfare or other government benefits and have income well below the poverty level. Those families that are employed have an average monthly income of $614. | ||||
